What is the Swage Tool used for?

Traditionally, both the Swage Tool and the Drive Wrench were required to complete the installation process. However, The Crownserts® Hand Installation Tool now combines these two functions in one tool.

The swage tool is used to complete the mechanical locking step of a threaded insert installation. After the insert has been screwed into the prepared hole, the swage tool is placed into the insert and driven downward until its shoulder or stop reaches the parent material.

This controlled movement forms the insert’s locking feature into the surrounding material, securing the insert in place.

Tool Features

The pilot end of the tool enters the insert and keeps the tool aligned during the swaging operation. Behind the pilot is the shoulder or nylon stop, which controls the final swaging depth.

When this stop bottoms out against the surface of the parent material, the swage has reached its intended depth.

Depending on the tool style, the stop may appear as a shoulder, collar, or nylon stop. Its purpose remains the same: it gives the installer a clear physical limit so the insert is not left under-swaged.

Using the Swage Tool

Insert the pilot of the swage tool into the installed insert. Keep the tool square to the work surface so that the load is applied straight through the insert.

Apply force with a hammer blow, manual arbor press, or hydraulic press until the stop bottoms out on the work piece. At that point, the insert has been fully swaged and the locking feature has been set.

After Swaging

Once the swage operation is complete, the installation should be checked with the correct after-swage gage. The swage tool sets the insert; the after-swage gage confirms that the set depth is acceptable.
