The after-swage gage is used after the swaging process to confirm that the threaded insert has been properly swaged within the required depth range, avoiding both over-swaging and under-swaging.

Swaging is a forming process where force is applied to slightly deform the insert so it expands or locks into the surrounding material. In threaded insert installation, swaging secures the insert in place by mechanically setting its locking feature into the prepared hole.

Using the After Swage Tool

After swaging, the inspection process can begin using the After Swage Tool. The tool has two ends, labeled G and N, which indicate “go” and “no-go,” respectively.

Begin by inserting the G end into the installed insert. If the tool bottoms out on the material surface, the insert has been fully swaged and is installed deeply enough. If a gap remains, the insert is not seated deeply enough and the swaging process must be repeated. A successful result is therefore indicated when the After Swage Tool “goes.”

Next, insert the N end into the insert. If a visible gap remains, the insert is installed at the correct depth. If the tool bottoms out, the insert is seated too deeply. A successful result is therefore indicated when the After Swage Tool does “not go.”
